About TonyWriter/Producer

Writer / Producer

Throughout my career I have written extensively for the theatre — essays, adaptations, and original works that reflect my lifelong fascination with the human condition and the transformative power of performance.

My music version of The Merchant of Venice, staged at the Roundabout Theatre in New York City, brought Shakespeare into a new register — with Theresa Saldana among the cast as a casket carrier. It was one of several classical works I reimagined through the lens of music and movement.

Charlatan

My late-career success was a one-man show that I wrote and performed: Charlatan, about the life and times of the Russian ballet impresario Serge Diaghilev. Diaghilev had fascinated me since I read a book about him when I was 12. I performed the show at theater festivals in the United States and abroad.

Diaghilev founded the Ballets Russes and collaborated with Stravinsky, Picasso, Matisse, and Coco Chanel — a man who shaped the entire course of 20th-century art. The challenge of inhabiting such a figure, and of writing a piece that could hold an audience alone on stage, was one of the great satisfactions of my working life.
